Lenten Series: One Day at a Time

This song crossed my radar about 1968 a few months following my mom diagnosis of Graves disease. After several months of bed rest due to a heart beat of 130 beats per minutes while flat on her back, the tests indicated the markers the doctor needed to proceed with treatment.

That treatment was liquid radioactive iodine. Gradually, her heart rate slowed, the medications were adjusted, and gradually her strength and stamina returned to normal range.

Though I was busy with cooking and cleaning for my dad and brother and keeping my grades up, I remember Mom having a deep, spiritual awakening during these months.

It was during this time Mom heard this song and claimed it as her witness. She didn’t often sing solos in church, but I remember her sharing this song because it meant so much to her.

As I got older, the impact of this song has “sunk in.” Mom did live her life from that time forward as though tomorrow might not be hers. I didn’t realize how much that was true until we were planning Dad’s funeral.

“I never thought that I’d have to do this for your dad. We both planned that he would have to carry on after I died once I drank that medicine. When we adopted DaNita and Gina, I just prayed that I could be there for them until they graduated from high school. I never expected that I’d get to see my grandchildren get married.”

While it is helpful to think about the future, all that we know about it is that God is there.

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. Revelation 1:8

Let me know in the comments if you remember this song.

One Day at a Time

I’m only human, I’m just a woman.
Help me believe in what I could be
And all that I am.
Show me the stairway, I have to climb.
Lord for my sake, teach me to take
One day at a time.

[Chorus]
One day at a time sweet Jesus
That’s all I’m asking from you.
Just give me the strength
To do everyday what I have to do.
Yesterday’s gone sweet Jesus
And tomorrow may never be mine.
Lord help me today, show me the way
One day at a time.

Do you remember, when you walked among men?
Well Jesus you know if you’re looking below
It’s worse now, than then.
Cheating and stealing, violence and crime
So for my sake, teach me to take
One day at a time.

[Chorus]

  1. Absolutely! What a great testimony. I didn’t realize your mom treasured this song so much, but it definitely fit for what she was going through. I do remember those weeks when she was bed-ridden. Mary
